Post-Covid Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a serious condition that appears to be linked to COVID-19.

Many cases of MISC have been reported in Uttar Pradesh. MIS-C reported to develops a month after recovery from Covid. MIS-C is rare, and most children who have it eventually get better with medical care. But some kids rapidly get worse, to the point where their lives are at risk.

Doctors and researchers are still researching why some children develop this illness after COVID-19 infection but not others .

What is MIS-C ?

MIS-C is a serious condition in which organs such as heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs get inflamed.

MIS-C usually affects school-age children, most commonly 8 and 9 years old. MIS-C symptoms appear between two and six weeks (four weeks on average) after COVID-19 infection.

The exact reasons behind MIS-C is still unknown, but at present, most cases are associated with Covid. At times, the antibodies developed during Covid go out of control and start attacking healthy cells of the organs leading to inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Fever that lasts 24 hours or longer
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Skin rashes
  • Lightheadedness
  • Diarrhoea

When to seek Emergency care?
